There are honestly not enough superlatives to accurately sum up the genius that is New Mexico-based singer-songwriter Dan Bern. He’s been making music since the mid 90s and has never veered away from political diatribes, social commentary and an ample amount of humor. He’s also uber prolific (he’s released 32 albums in 25 years).
His 2015 album Hoody was one of my favorites of that year and his 2001 masterpiece New American Language is one of my all time favorite albums. Fittingly enough that album also was released on vinyl for the first time this past fall. And it’s not just me who finds Bern so compelling. Roger Daltrey of The Who has been quoted as saying: ““He’s been one of my favourite songwriters and musicians for the past 28 years.”
Now Bern is readying his 29th album Starting Over, due out March 1 on Grand Phony Records. The album is a collaboration with Boston band Jane’s Great Dane. Bern collaborating with under-the-radar musicians is not new. He recorded a few albums with Los Angeles’ Common Rotation Lead single “Bible” is a controversial look at our current divisiveness and is quintessential Bern in every sense of the word. When asked about the song, Bern said the following: “In the midst of so much rancor and division, ‘no one in the Bible was white’ was a phrase that I had seen somewhere, and it seemed worthy of a song.” If “Bible” is any indication Starting Over is going to be one of this year’s finest singer-songwriter releases.
