The verdict is still out on whether Sheryl Crow has been a solid addition to country music. Since migrating to the genre in 2013, her albums have been hit and miss. But she’s a tireless songwriter with a top-notch work ethic, a Rock and Roll Hall-of-Fame member, a cancer survivor and an all around bad-ass woman.

Her latest single “Do It Again” just dropped today and well, it’s pretty vanilla. Of the song, Crow says: “I feel like I’ve been writing this for 30 years. To me, lfie is one long exploration in how to live life joyfully.” That might be true, but one wonders if this song was rushed. While lyrically rich “Do It Again” just leaves a lot to be desired. If she canceled her retirement to churn out a song like this, well, that kinda sucks. Who knows, maybe the song will grow in time? If “Do It Again” doesn’t do it for you (it doesn’t yet for us either), lead single “Alarm Clock,” which dropped in November is far more winning.

Crow’s album Evolution is due out March 29 on the Valory Music Co. In a press release for the album Crow writes: “This music and these lyrics came from sitting in the quiet and writing from a deep soul place. I said I’d never make another record, thought there was no point to it. But this music comes from my soul. And I hope whoever hears this record can feel that.

While we all can respect that there’s something about “Do It Again” that makes one wonder if the album was rushed, if the record label pressured her post-Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, to put something else out there? Who the heck knows? The real question though is this:

Is Evolution really her final album? Who knows. She said she was done once before. But these days retirements never seem to last. Certainly not in sports and now apparently, not in music either.
