Dallas, TX’s alt-country heavyweights Old 97s have announced a new album American Primitive, the band’s thirteenth, is due out April 5 on ATO Records. Three decades into a career that happened by accident Rhett Miller and company continue to remain one of the forefathers of the late 90s alt-country movement and this release continues to keep that narrative front and center.

Produced by Tucker Martine (The Decemberists, My Morning Jacket, Aiofe O’Donovan, Rosanne Cash, Neko Case, Tift Merritt, Abigail Washburn) American Primitive features Peter Buck of REM and Scott McGaughey of The Minus 5. Buck is even featured on lead single “Where the Road Goes” (seen above). In press notes about the album frontman Rhett Miller said the following: “As much as I want us to calm down and grow up, the songs that felt right for this record were mostly big and loud and brutal and dirty.” Moreover, best-selling novelist and passionate Old 97s fan Stephen King says of the album: “It’s fantastic.” Other advance praise has come from the likes of Rosanne Cash, actor Rainn Wilson and comedian Tig Notaro.

Pre-orders of America Primitive on limited edition bone and brown vinyl are available via the ATO shop. The initial pressing was limited to 750 copies and according to ATO Records only a few copies remain.
