There are a slew of “Bonus Day” and “Leap Day” promotions flooding my inbox and naturally some are of the musical variety. Of all the ones that have come through none is more appealing than this: a download of Wilco‘s Spring 2008 tour stop on March 9 at Val-Air Ballroom in Des Moines, IA.
The recording is part of Wilco’s Front of House series which navigates 25+ years of live music, past and present. The series includes exclusive recordings releaesd on the last Wednesday of February (that’s today), May, August and November.
Anyone who knows me knows when it comes to the Uncle Tupelo split, I am Team Jay all the way. But that being written, I cannot overlook the brilliance that is Jeff Tweedy and the Wilco live shows are downright legendary. This 2008 download from Des Moines, IA is further proof of that. Just phenomenal musicianship from start to finish. Holy wow.
As for Wilco in 2024. A week from today the band will be in Japan for the first time in a decade. Bandmember Glenn Kotche is already in Japan warming up with three special performances of Exhibit B and Calling Glenn on March 1-3 at Tokyo’s Setagaya Public Theater. After next week’s performances in Tokyo and Osaka, Wilco will visit Australia for shows in Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne and Sydney. Anyone reading this post from Australia can get tickets here.
The band will return to the United States for Solid Sound 2024 (the band’s own comedy, music and arts festival). Single day tickets are on sale now. For details on the lineup, head here.
The band ‘s Asian/Australian tour is just the latest stop supporting their fantastic album Cousin, which came out last year. Cousin is their thirteenth studio album and like everything in their discography it absolutely slays from the very first seconds. This writer might be very pro-Team Jay and very pro-Son Volt but even he can admit to the greatness that is Wilco. Good music is good music.
