The last thing the world needs is another “Ring of Fire” cover but when Lykke Li‘s name is attached, well then it might be worth your time and attention. Li’s version, which is twinkling and nocturnal is pretty much everything one could ask for and more.

Li’s cover is being used for the Netflix film Damsel, which debuts March 8 and is featured during the end credits. The film centers on an impoverished woman (Millie Bobby Brown) who marries into a royal family only to have the fairytale romance get flipped on its head in a startling turn of events.

Li worked with producer Andrew Sarlo (Lizzy McAlpine, Weyes Blood, Hovvdy, Mon Laferte, Courtney Marie Andrews) for the ethereal, haunting and hypnotic new take on the Cash classic. The song was recorded in one take, an approach she also used to record her 2022 album Eyeye. Li’s version of “Ring of Fire” includes slinky synths and layered harmonies resulting in something gauzy, hazy and utterly spellbinding.

Yes, “Ring of Fire” has been covered in exhausting amounts since its original release in 1963 but Li’s modern take is equal parts refreshing, invigorating and wholly original.
