San Francisco country rockers New Riders of the Purple Sage (NRPS) have announced a new live album due out April 19 via Omnivore Recordings. Entitled Hempsteader: Live at the Calderone Concert Hall, Hempstead, NY, June 25, 1976 the album features 18 tracks recorded live from Long Island. The track list includes cover songs by the likes of Chuck Berry, Otis Redding, The Rolling Stones, Delbert McClinton, Hazel Dickens, Loudon Wainwright III and a slew of frontman John Dawson’s originals
New Riders grew to prominence in 1969 with an original lineup including several Grateful Dead members. The band released their self-titled debut in 1971 on Columbia Records. Three albums later, while still on Columbia, the band released 1973’s The Adventures of Panama Red which reached RIAA Gold status.
Hempsteader is produced by Rob Bleetstein, host and producer of Sirius XM’s Grateful Dead and Pearl Jam channels and a New Riders archivist. Bleetstein also provided photos and liner notes for the album. Bleetstein has previously produced and helmed NRPS’ albums Thanksgiving in New York City, Field Trip and Lyceum ’72.
