I’d be remiss to have the day go by without taking time to honor two passings of note. Karl Wallinger of World Party and The Waterboys passed away yesterday at the age of 66. Wallinger penned many memorable lines but few were as profound as the following:
“Colors scents and symphonies
Fall on me like tears
And time around me stretches back
And forth across the years
Was I sent to see your beauty
Just to please my aching heart
Well I want to say good morning
But I don’t know where to start
Thank you world.“
Eric Carmen, formerly of The Raspberries, and then well known for his solo career, passed away yesterday at age 74. Carmen’s solo career might have been yacht-rock, soft-rock, adult contemporary but damn if those songs didn’t slay.
As for Wallinger, World Party were incredible, ditto for the Waterboys. While Carmen’s loss is profound, Wallinger’s is the one that stings the most. Sixty-six is way too young. And damn his songs were special.
