Far be it from me to make a comment on pop music, but here goes nothing. Billie Eilish has gotten all of about four listens from me in the last half decade and it’s only because I watch award shows. However her latest comments about vinyl mass consumption have me intrigued and quite frankly inspired. As a huge fan of Reverb and the movement to make the music business more eco-friendly Eilish’s comments are justified, timely and quite frankly a wake-up call.
At some point this week Eilish made the comment to Billboard that artists who issue variant vinyl releases are wasteful and scheming the charts system. Artists who have used the vinyl variants trend to rack up chart success include but is not limited to: Panic at the Disco, Harry Styles, Pearl Jam, and The Rolling Stones, among others.
In my beloved country music genre, Kacey Musgraves just announced vinyl variants of her new Deeper Well album, but alas, the most immediate and obvious example of the vinyl variant gimmick is none other than Taylor Swift.
So will this become a war of words? Miss Swift is not one to accept criticism and take it quietly. Or maybe this is all much ado about nothing. In the end, Eilish deserves credit for taking a stand to try and eliminate mass production of music. Lord knows we need that more than ever!
