Boston-based singer-songwriter Mark Erelli‘s 1999 self-titled debut album will hit digital streaming platforms for the first time this Friday. The album (which is a personal favorite of this writer) came on the heels of Erelli winning the much coveted New Folk Award at 1999’s Kerrville Folk Festival.

Produced by Lorne Entress in western Massachusetts the album marked the arrival of Erelli as a majoy player in American roots music. And while Erelli is still unknown in some parts of this country, he has crafted a pretty splendid career. He’s an in-demand sideman for folks like Marc Cohn, Lori McKenna and Paula Cole to name a few, and he’s an in-demand producer who has worked on albums by the likes of McKenna and others. He’s also been nominated for an Americana Music Award for Song of the Year.

To celebrate the album’s 25th anniversary and its arrival on digital streaming platforms Erelli will host a listening party via Bandcamp at 3 p.m. EST today.. The album will also features a re-recorded version of closing track “Northern Star” featuring a string quintet. Said song is one of the only from the album Erelli still plays live. The string section was composed and arranged by Erelli’s longtime collaborator Zachariah Hickman, who is most well known for being the bassist in Josh Ritter’s touring band.
