Things have been super quiet on the blog front lately, but not for lack of good music to write abouut. Being a twin father is demanding as is the day job and a lack of free time. Thanksgiving is upon us so not much blogging will happen until after that.
In an effort to end the drought, today’s artist of the week is Little Rock, AR indie-duo joan (stylized lowercase intentionally). Seen earlier this month (they opened for MisterWives) the band delivered a modern and intriguing take on R+B drenched indie pop that resembles England’s The 1975. While the lyrics are a bit saccharine the band’s stage presence and polish were remarkable for such a young band. The songs themeslves are honeyed and buoyant and full of hope, longing and romance. And the hooks, oh my word, hooks galore.
joan released their debut album last year after releasing a series of EPs previously. During their 45-minute opening set the duo debuted a new song, which means another new EP or album might be in the works. Whether those releases see the light of day before the end of 2025 remains to be seen, but for now we can’t stop listening to joan.
They might just be this writer’s favorite new band. Hope they’ll be yours too! All it takes is one song!
