As much as I don’t want to give it credit: the Spotify algorithm knows me quite well. So, it came as a surprise to me that it recommended the spiky single “I Hate Love” by indie-alt-rock singer-songwriter Lina-Mariah Doesn’t the algorithm know my indie-folk, country and CCM leanings?
Welps, the album was jarring and intriguing at the same time, so without further ado, here goes:
If you’re in the mood for angry alt-rock a la Olivia Rodrigo, look no further than Lina-Mariah, whose debut album I Feel Like S$#@$# And It’s All Your Fault is due out this Friday. As the album title suggest there’s a host of profanity on this record. But if that’s your thing and you need to channel your inner riot girl, this is not a bad album to pick up. Whether it’s the howling fury of album opener “Girl With a Gun, Angry” or the explosive and catchy “I Don’t Wanna Go!” it’s a potent one-two punch right out of the gate.
But Lina-Mariah is far from done. “Took Ur Face” is dizzying while also being borderline disturbing, the song is meant to be light-hearted but holy wow, this is a woman possessed and scorned, similarly “Best Friend” is biting, vengeful and manically angry. “Whatever” is a spiteful kiss-off while “I Hate Love” says it all in the song title. The album’s back half continues the roller coaster ride with the raucous “Rich as F$#!,” the fiery “Sawdust” and the jolting “Wake Up!“
Guitar-driven rock is all but lost in the modern Top 40 landscape but stalwarts like Rodrigo are doing their part to keep it current. Whether I Feel Like S$!# makes its to Top 40 remains to be seen, but for those that need to rage and seethe, this might not be an album to overlook.
